I Mostly Say Yes I am One When They Call Me

Mystifying is the turn of time, indeed. The same Allama Iqbal who was given fatwa’s on, by his contemporary “Mullahs” is now quoted by well-reputed Mullahs of the same school of thought.

The same Bulleh Shah, who had been refused by the mullahs to be buried after his death in the community graveyard because of his unorthodox views, today enjoys worldwide reverence and is quoted by contemporary mullahs. The tomb of Bulleh Shah in Qasur and the area around it is today the only place free of collective refuse, and the privileged of the city pay handsomely to be buried in the proximity of the man they had once rejected.

Maulana Rum (aka Rumi), who was condemned as a kaafir, is not only the top selling poet across the globe but is held in high reverence by people of all religions.

Honestly, I am not such a genius person.I dont know what right is but I do know what wrong is.I think that the verses of Bulleh Shah force me to write again. Every word that was misinterpreted by mullahs, can serve a cure for all the ills we are facing in our times.

Chal Way Bullehya Chal O’thay Chaliyay
Jithay Saaray Annay
Na Koi Saadee Zaat PichHanay
Tay Na Koi Saanu Mannay

O’ Bulleh Shah let’s go there
Where everyone is blind
Where no one recognizes our caste (or race, or family name)
And where no one believes in us

Masjid Dha Day, Mandir Dha Day
Dha Day Jo Kujh Disda
Par Kissay Da Dil Na Dhawee(n)
Rub Dilaa(n) Wich Wasda

Tear down the Mosque, tear down the temple
Tear down every thing in sight
But don’t (tear down) break anyone’s heart
Because God lives there

Hindu na nahi musalmaan,
Baheeye tiranjan taj abhimaan.
Sunni na naheeN ham sheeya
Sulha kuhl ka maarag leeya.

Neither Hindu nor Muslim,
Sacrificing pride, let us sit together.
Neither Sunni nor Shia,
Let us walk the road of peace.

Props to Junoon, Rabbi, Abida Parveen, Saeen Zahoor and other musicians of our times for helping the new generation in rediscovering the message of Bulleh Shah. Junoon started the trend and was labeled as “Sufi Rock Band” – The message that pierced my heart was through them, when I was 12.

This first aspect of Bulleh Shah’s poetry and philosophy that strikes upfront is his bold and almost arrogant critique of the religious orthodoxy of his day; specifically the Islamic religious orthodoxy. His poetry is filled with direct attacks on anyone claiming control over religion.

Mulla tay mashaalchi dohaan ikko chit
Loukan karday chananan, aap anhairae vich

Mullah and the torch-bearer, both from the same flock
Trying to give light to others; themselves in the dark

Bulleh Shah’s poetry portray him as a humanist. Someone providing solutions to the sociological/political/cultural problems of the world around him, describing the turbulence his homeland of Punjab is passing through, while simultaneously searching for God. His poetry highlights his mystical spiritual journey through the four stages of Sufism – Shariat (Path), Tariqat (Observance), Haqiqat (Truth) and Marfat (Union). He starts from the rules as laid down by Islam, and eventually ends up at a point where he accepts the existence of GOD, everywhere, with no discrimination between different religions, finally becoming one with GOD.

Pointing at someone else’s faith would only unveil how weak your faith is. Picking up guns, instead of pens to enforce your way of thinking would never have an effect that the likes of Bulleh Shah had through his soul-searching and heart-melting poetry.

Islam was never spread by sword. It wouldn’t be the fastest growing religion on earth if that were the case. Islam is spread by the message of love and by deeds, not the way Taliban “ENFORCE” it.

Lord Almighty Himself says:
There shall be no compulsion in religion – [2:256]

I cannot help pasting the verse below:

Bulleh-a aashiq hoyiyon Rabb da, Hoai Malamat Lakh
Tenon Kafir Kafir aakhdey, toon aaho aaho aakh

O Bulleh, just love your God and ignore the chidings
When they say you are an infidel, say “yes I am one”

*Ali Maula, Ali Maula*

Man Kunto Maula

shaah-e-mardaaN
sher-e-yazdaaN
quvvat-e-parvardigaar
laa fataa illaa Ali
laa saif illaa zulfiqaar

King of the brave,
lion of God,
[and] strength of God.
There is no one like Ali [and]
there is no sword like Zulfiqaar*.

* Zulfiqaar was the sword of Ali presented to him by Muhammad.

Ali imaam-e-manasto manam Ghulaam-e-Ali
hazaar jaan-e-giraamii fidaa-e-naam-e-Ali

Ali is the master of all, I am the slave of Ali
thousands life are to be sacrificed for Ali.

man kunto maulaa
fa haaza Aliun maulaa

To whom I am the master
Ali is the master.

Note: A famous tradition (hadith) of Prophet Muhammad. Ali was his cousin and son-in-law.

daaraa dil daaraa dil daar-e-daanii
tum tum taa naa naa naanaa, naanaa naanaa re
yaalaalii yaalaalii yaalaa, yaalaa yaalaa

Mystical chants sung by Sufis without any specific meaning.

In some versions, Nusrat has also recited the following stanza:

Ali shaah-e-mardaaN imaamun kabiiraa
ke baadasht nabii shud bashirush naziiraa

Ali is the king of the brave and the great leader
because after the Prophet there is Ali.

Ali imaam-e-manasto manam Ghulaam-e-Ali
hazaar jaan-e-giraamii fidaa-e-naam-e-Ali

Ali is the master of all, I am the slave of Ali
a thousand lives are to be sacrificed for Ali

Note: Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad. He is especially revered by the Sufi mystics.

Haidariam qalandaram mastam
bandaa-e-Murtaza Ali hastam
peshvaa-e-tamaam virdaaram
ke sage kuu-e-sher-e-yazdaanam

Haider [Ali] is the generous monk
Ali is the chosen one [by God]
[and] the leader of the people swaying in [God’s] remembrance
I am the dog of the streets of God’s lion.

kabhii diivaar hiltii hai, kabhii dar kaaNp jaataa hai
Ali kaa naam sun kar ab bhii Khaibar kaaNp jaataa hai

Sometimes the wall shakes, sometimes trembles the door
on listening the name of Ali, the fort of Khaibar trembles even now.

Note: During the fight for the Fort of Khaibar, Ali rooted out the heavy door of the fort and used it as his shield.

Shaah-e-mardaaN Ali..
Ali..Ali…Ali…
Ali Maula Ali…

King of the brave
Ali
Ali, [my] master Ali.

patthar pe alam deen ka gaaRaa jisne
lalkaar kar Marhab ko pichaaRaa jisne..

Singer: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

*Koi To Hai Jo Nizam-e-Hasti Chala Raha Hai*

ko’ii to hai jo nizaam-e-hastii chalaa rahaa hai..
Wohii Khudaa hai..Wohii Khudaa hai..Wohii Khudaa hai…
dikha’ii bhii jo na de nazar bhii jo aa rahaa hai
Wohii Khudaa hai, Wohii Khudaa hai, Wohii Khudaa hai

(Someone is there who is managing the order of life
He is God, He is God, He is God
He is invisible still He can be seen
He is God, He is God, He is God)

nazar bhii rakhe sama’ateN bhii…Wo jaan letaa hai niyyateN bhii..
jo Khaana-e-laa-shauur meN jagmagaa rahaa hai…Wohii Khudaa hai..
Wohii Khudaa hai, Wohii Khudaa hai, Wohii Khudaa hai..

(He keep eyes and ears too, He knows even the intentions
The one who is illuminated in our subconscious minds
He is God, He is God, He is God)

Talaash us ko na kar butoN meN.. Wo hai badaltii hu’ii rutoN meN
Jo din ko raat aur raat ko din banaa rahaa hai…Wohii Khudaa hai
Wohii Khudaa hai…Wohii Khudaa hai..Wohii Khudaa hai

(Do not search for Him in the idols, He is in the changing seasons
The one who is changing day to night and night to day
He is God, He is God, He is God)

Poet :Bulleh Shah

Bullah kih janan main kaun?

0 Bullah, what do I know who I am?

I am not among believers seen in mosques…
Nor am I versed in the traditions of unbelief…
I am not among the pious, nor among the sinful…
I am neither Moses, nor am I a Pharaoh…
0 Bullah, what do I know who I am?

I am not in the Vedas, nor in the holy books;….
I am not among hemp-eaters or wine-drinkers….
I am not among profligates, nor among libertines….
I am neither among the awake, nor among the sleeping….
0 Bullah, what do I know who I am?

I am impervious to joy as well as sorrow…
I am not among the virtuous, nor among the wicked…
I am neither of water, nor of earth…
I am neither of fire, nor of air….
0 Bullah, what do I know who I am?

I am not from Arabia, nor from Lahore…
I am not from India, nor from Nagore….
I am not a Hindu, nor a Muslim from Peshawar….
Nor do I reside in the city of Nadaun….
0 Bullah, what do I know who I am?

I have no t solved the mystery of religion…
Nor am I a progeny of Adam and Eve…
Nor have I a specific name of my own…

I am neither among the settled, nor among the roaming….
0 Bullah, what do I know who I am?

I take myself to be the beginning and the end..
I do not recognize any one else…
There is no one who is wiser than I….
0 Bullah, who is the Lord standing there?

0 Bullah, what do I know who I am?
